7 Autumn/Winter 2026 Fashion Trends We’re Loving — and How to Actually Wear Them
Autumn is officially here and, if we’re honest, this is one of our favourite times of year for fashion.
The knitwear makes its comeback, the colours become richer, the layers come out and suddenly getting dressed feels a little more exciting again. There is just something about that first properly crisp morning that makes us want to reach for a fabulous new jumper, pull on our favourite jeans and pretend we have our autumn wardrobe completely organised.
Even if the reality is that we are standing in front of the wardrobe at 8am wondering whether it is a T-shirt day, a coat day or — because this is Northern Ireland — somehow both.
The good news is that the Autumn/Winter 2026 fashion trends are genuinely wearable. We’re not talking about anything that only looks good on a catwalk or requires an instruction manual. This season is all about rich chocolate browns, deep berry shades, easy olive greens, beautiful knitwear, wide-leg jeans, faux suede and clever layers that help you look pulled together without feeling overdone.
And that is exactly the kind of fashion we love at Style Boutique.
We are never interested in buying into a trend simply because someone has declared it “in”. What matters is whether a piece works for your wardrobe, your lifestyle and the clothes you already own. Can you wear it more than once? Can you dress it up and down? Will you still love it when the next trend comes along?
If the answer is yes, then we are listening.
So, whether you are looking for autumn outfit ideas for women over 40, wondering which colours are fashionable for Autumn 2026 or simply fancy one or two new pieces to freshen up your wardrobe, here are the seven trends we’re loving — and, more importantly, how to actually wear them.
1. Chocolate Brown Is Everywhere 🤎
If you have been anywhere near Instagram, Pinterest or the shops lately, you will probably have noticed one colour appearing again and again.
Chocolate brown.
And we are very happy about it.
After years of black and navy doing most of the heavy lifting in our wardrobes, chocolate brown feels warm, luxurious and just a little bit different. It is softer than black, richer than camel and surprisingly easy to wear, which makes it one of the most flattering and versatile Autumn/Winter 2026 colour trends.
The Olsen Coffee Bean collection is a gorgeous way to try the look. Whether you choose a blouse, a knit, a jacket or a pair of trousers, Coffee Bean has that lovely deep brown tone that looks polished without feeling severe.
We are also loving the YEW Edge-to-Edge Jacket in Chocolate Brown – Abigail. This is the sort of piece that earns its place in your wardrobe very quickly. Throw it over a simple top and jeans for everyday style, add it to trousers for work or layer it over a dress when you want something a little smarter.
In other words, it is the jacket you reach for when your outfit needs “something” but you cannot quite work out what. We all have those mornings.
What colours go with chocolate brown?
More than you might think. Try chocolate brown with:
-
Cream or ivory for a soft, expensive-looking combination
-
Blue denim for an easy everyday outfit
-
Camel and beige for tonal autumn dressing
-
Berry or burgundy for a rich seasonal colour mix
-
Olive green for an earthy, modern look
-
Gold jewellery to bring out its warmth
If your wardrobe is normally built around black, navy and grey, brown is a very easy update. You do not need to suddenly become a head-to-toe tonal-dressing expert. Start with one chocolate brown jacket, knit or pair of trousers and wear it with pieces you already know and love.
Style Boutique tip: If brown close to your face does not feel quite right, try it on your bottom half with cream, ivory or a flattering print on top. Trends are there to work for you — not the other way around.
2. We’re Definitely on Team Berry 🍷
Berry, burgundy, wine, dark cherry, merlot… call it whatever you like, this colour is having a serious moment for Autumn/Winter 2026.
And we can see why.
Berry gives you colour without feeling bright or overpowering. It has all the richness of autumn, but it is still incredibly easy to style with the neutrals already hanging in your wardrobe. It works beautifully with black, navy, cream, grey, chocolate brown and denim, so there is very little danger of bringing something home and having absolutely nothing to wear with it.
One collection we are particularly loving is Barbara Lebek in Dark Berry.
The Barbara Lebek Cape Jacket in Dark Berry is a brilliant example of an easy statement piece. Wear it over a simple top with jeans or trousers and suddenly the entire outfit looks considered — even if it took you about three minutes to put together.
Our favourite kind of fashion, frankly.
And if berry is not quite your colour, the same Barbara Lebek cape comes in a beautiful taupe too. You still get the shape, movement and easy layering, just in a softer neutral shade.
How to wear berry and burgundy this autumn
For an easy daytime outfit, team a berry knit or jacket with dark denim and trainers. For lunch or work, add black trousers and a loafer or ankle boot. If you love colour, berry also looks gorgeous with blush pink, soft blue or chocolate brown.
Not ready for a full berry outfit? A printed blouse, scarf or fine knit is a simple way to introduce the shade without feeling as though the colour is wearing you.
Berry is also particularly lovely for autumn fashion for women over 40 and 50 because it brings warmth to the face and feels colourful without looking overly fussy. If your wardrobe has started to feel a little flat after summer, this could be the shade that brings it back to life.
Style Boutique tip: Treat berry exactly as you would treat navy. Once you stop thinking of it as a “bold colour” and start using it as a base, it becomes much easier to wear.
3. Knitwear Has Had a Glow-Up
Knitwear for autumn is hardly breaking news. Somewhere, Miranda Priestly is raising an eyebrow.
But this season’s knitwear really does feel more interesting.
We are seeing beautiful prints, subtle shimmer, texture, embellished details, flattering necklines and clever shapes that make a jumper feel like the main event rather than the thing you reluctantly put on because the heating is still off.
Monari knitwear is particularly good at this. The brand knows how to take a comfortable everyday knit and add just enough detail to make it feel special.
The Monari French Pattern Shimmer Knit Jumper in Olive is one of those pieces that can go in several directions. Wear it with jeans and trainers for daytime, swap in tailored trousers and jewellery for dinner or layer it under a jacket when the weather becomes properly chilly.
Our new Alison Sheri knitwear collection also has some gorgeous, easy-to-wear options. The Alison Sheri Knit Jumper With Snood in Sand Combo is perfect if you like comfort but still want your outfit to have a little personality. The snood gives you that coordinated, styled finish without the familiar ten-minute hunt for a scarf that matches.
How to choose knitwear you will actually wear
When you are buying a jumper, ask yourself:
-
Could I wear this with jeans?
-
Could I dress it up with smart trousers or a skirt?
-
Could I layer it underneath a jacket or coat?
If the answer is yes to all three, you are onto a winner.
It is also worth thinking about length and shape. If you love wide-leg jeans or trousers, a slightly neater or shorter knit can help balance the outfit. If you prefer slim trousers, a longer jumper or relaxed tunic shape can work beautifully.
And please do not save your “good jumper” for a special occasion. If it makes you feel fabulous, wear it for the school run, coffee with friends, a trip into town or a Tuesday afternoon in the shop. Clothes are meant to be enjoyed.
Style Boutique tip: A fine knit is one of the hardest-working pieces in an autumn capsule wardrobe. It can be worn alone now, layered under a blazer in October and tucked beneath a winter coat later in the season.
4. Wide-Leg Jeans Aren’t Going Anywhere
We hear this question all the time:
“Are wide-leg jeans still in style for 2026?”
Yes. Very much so.
That does not mean you have to throw out every slim or straight-leg pair you own. Absolutely not. The best jeans are still the jeans you feel good in, and no trend gets to tell you otherwise.
But if you fancy trying something a little different this autumn, a wider leg is one of the easiest ways to make your everyday wardrobe feel current. Wide-leg denim has a relaxed, modern shape and can look incredibly flattering when the fit and proportions are right.
We love the Angels Liz Glory Wide Fit Jeans for exactly that reason. They give you the updated silhouette without feeling too extreme, making them a very wearable choice for women who want to try the trend without feeling swallowed by denim.
What should you wear with wide-leg jeans?
The key is balance. Because the jeans have more volume through the leg, try pairing them with a top that has a little structure or definition.
-
For coffee with friends: A fine knit, wide-leg jeans and trainers
-
For lunch: A printed blouse, jeans and loafers
-
For work: A tucked-in top, neat jacket and ankle boots
-
For an evening out: A shimmer knit, dark denim and heeled boots
A full tuck is not compulsory — we promise. Try a small front tuck, a shorter knit or a jacket that finishes around the hip. The aim is simply to show some shape and stop the outfit feeling too heavy.
If you are petite, do not assume wide-leg jeans are off limits. Choose the correct length, keep the waist defined and avoid too much fabric pooling around the shoe. A slightly higher rise can also help to lengthen the leg.
Style Boutique tip: Take the shoes you are most likely to wear when trying on wide-leg jeans. The perfect length with trainers can be very different from the perfect length with a heel or ankle boot.
5. Faux Suede Is Back — and We’re Not Mad About It
There is something about faux suede that just feels like autumn.
Maybe it is the soft texture. Maybe it is the warm earthy colour palette. Or maybe it is because faux suede can make a basic jeans-and-T-shirt outfit look as though you planned it days in advance.
Whatever the reason, we are delighted to see it back.
The Rabe Faux Suede Shacket is a brilliant example because it sits somewhere between a shirt and a jacket. It is ideal for those awkward in-between days when it is too cold to go without a jacket but far too warm for the winter coat.
So… most of September and October in Northern Ireland, then.
We are also loving faux suede in berry, chocolate and earthy neutral shades this season. These colours make it easy to pair with denim, cream knitwear, printed blouses and smart trousers.
How to style a faux suede jacket or shacket
For everyday wear, leave it open over a plain T-shirt or fine knit and add jeans. For a smarter outfit, button it up and wear it with tailored trousers. You can also layer a faux suede jacket over a casual dress to carry it into autumn.
If you are wearing wide-leg jeans or trousers, try a slightly shorter faux suede jacket to keep the proportions balanced. With slim or straight-leg trousers, you can easily go for a longer shacket shape.
The beauty of faux suede is that it adds interest without adding a print. So, if you prefer a simple, neutral wardrobe, texture is a lovely way to stop an outfit from looking flat.
Style Boutique tip: Mix faux suede with contrasting textures. Try it with a soft knit, crisp blouse, denim or faux leather. That contrast is what makes a tonal outfit look rich rather than one-dimensional.
6. Olive Green Is Perfect If You “Don’t Wear Colour” 🫒
You know when someone says, “Oh, I don’t really wear colour,” while standing in an outfit made entirely of black, navy and beige?
Then olive comes along.
It is technically a colour, of course, but it behaves very much like a neutral. That is exactly why we love it.
Olive green has a softness that makes it easy to wear, yet it still adds something different to an outfit. It also works across casual, smart and dressier wardrobes, so it is not going to be a one-outfit wonder.
The new Monari Olive collection has some gorgeous pieces, including the Monari French Pattern Top With Puff Sleeves and the Monari French Pattern Shimmer Knit Jumper. The print and subtle detail give you interest, while the olive colour keeps everything easy and wearable.
And no, you absolutely do not need to wear olive from head to toe.
What colours look good with olive green?
Try:
-
Cream and olive for a fresh, soft look
-
Chocolate brown and olive for rich autumnal dressing
-
Black and olive for an easy, modern outfit
-
Denim and olive for everyday casual style
-
Camel and olive for a classic combination
-
Berry and olive if you fancy mixing two of the season’s biggest colours
Olive is also lovely with the earthy browns coming through from YAYA this season. A simple olive top or knit worn with YAYA trousers or a brown layering piece feels very now, but it will not date quickly.
If you usually live in neutrals but want to try something different, olive is a very safe place to start. It gives the wardrobe a lift without making you feel like a completely different person.
Style Boutique tip: If olive makes your complexion look a little tired, add cream near your face with a scarf, shirt collar or layered top. A small change can make a big difference.
7. Layering Season Is Officially Back
Living in Northern Ireland, we could probably write a whole book about layering.
Cold in the morning.
Surprisingly mild by lunchtime.
Raining at 2pm.
Freezing again by 5pm.
And, for reasons nobody can explain, the sun appears the second you put on your heaviest coat.
So yes, layers are our friend.
This season we are seeing lots of lightweight jackets, gilets, sleeveless knits and spencers. These are perfect for transitional autumn weather because they add warmth without the bulk of a full winter coat.
The YAYA Wool Blend Spencer in Teak Brown looks gorgeous layered over a white top, fine knit or blouse. It adds shape and texture while still letting the piece underneath do some of the talking.
The Olsen Faux Fur Gilet in Almond Beige is another easy option if you want warmth, texture and a touch of glamour. Wear it over knitwear with jeans for a relaxed weekend outfit or add it over a blouse and trousers for something smarter.
Monari also has some beautiful gilets and layering pieces in the new collection, which are ideal if you enjoy a little embellishment or detail.
The easy autumn layering formula
Start with three simple parts:
-
A comfortable base layer — T-shirt, blouse or fine knit
-
A middle layer — spencer, cardigan, gilet or lightweight jacket
-
An outer layer — trench, shacket or coat when the weather demands it
The best part is that the formula changes with the temperature.
T-shirt in September.
Long sleeves in October.
Knitwear by November.
Job done.
Keep the lightest, neatest fabrics closest to the body and build outwards. That way, you stay warm without feeling bulky or losing your shape beneath several layers.
Style Boutique tip: A sleeveless knit or gilet is a brilliant option if you tend to feel too warm indoors. You get the cosy autumn look without spending the entire day taking your jumper on and off.
So, What Should Actually Be in Your Autumn Wardrobe?
You definitely do not need to replace everything in your wardrobe every season.
In fact, we would rather you did not.
A wardrobe full of impulse buys that do not work together is no use to anyone. Start with a few really good pieces that suit your shape, your day-to-day life and the clothes you already own.
For a practical Autumn/Winter capsule wardrobe for women, we would begin with:
-
A great-fitting pair of jeans or trousers
-
One beautiful piece of knitwear
-
A lightweight jacket, shacket or gilet
-
An easy blouse or top that works for day and evening
-
A comfortable pair of boots, trainers or loafers
-
One new-season colour that works with your existing neutrals
That new piece might be a Monari statement knit, an Olsen jacket in Coffee Bean, a Rabe blouse, a Barbara Lebek berry layer, a pair of Angels wide-leg jeans or some beautifully cut YAYA trousers.
Before you buy, picture at least three outfits you could make with it. Better still, think of three pieces already in your wardrobe that will work with it. If nothing comes to mind, it may not be the hard-working wardrobe hero you need.
The best wardrobe is not the one with the most clothes or the greatest number of trends.
It is the one where you open the door in the morning and actually want to wear what is inside.
How to Make Autumn 2026 Trends Work for Your Personal Style
The easiest way to wear a trend is to translate it into something that already feels like you.
If you live in jeans, try a new-season knit or chocolate brown jacket. If you prefer smart trousers, add a berry blouse or faux suede layer. If prints are your thing, look for an olive or autumn-toned pattern. If you are happiest in neutrals, bring in texture through faux suede, shimmer knitwear or a faux fur gilet.
You do not have to wear every trend. You do not even have to like every trend.
Fashion should give you ideas, not homework.
Choose the colours, shapes and fabrics that make you feel like the best version of yourself. That is always more stylish than wearing something simply because everyone else is wearing it.
