Weddings are a cause for celebration for all. While their wedding will be a particularly special day for the bride and groom, it is also a wonderful time for friends and family. And there are two especially important ladies in the wedding party: the mothers of the bride and groom.

If you’re attending a wedding this year as the mother of the bride or groom, you’ll surely be on the hunt for a gorgeous dress to stun in. Buying your dress should be exciting, not stressful, so we’re here to make sure you have the right information so you can choose the perfect outfit for the special day.

How Early is Too Early to Buy My Mother of the Bride or Groom Dress?

As most mothers of the bride and groom buy their dresses off the peg, you don’t have to plan too far in advance. At the very least, you should wait until the bride and bridesmaid’s dresses have been selected before choosing yours, as these will set the tone for the day.

While we don’t recommend leaving buying your dress to the last minute, you certainly don’t need to rush. If you begin looking for the perfect outfit six months before the wedding, you’ll have more than enough time to make your purchase and commission any alterations.

Will My Mother of the Bride or Groom Dress Go Out of Style?

All clothes will inevitably go out of style as fashion changes over time. If you’re looking to purchase your dress in the six months before the big day, it’s highly unlikely your dress will go out of fashion in that time.

This is one of the many reasons why it’s recommended you wait until closer to the time to pick out your dress. Plus, you can always double-check your choice with the bride and groom.

If I Find a Beautiful Dress, Should You Say ‘Yes’?

This depends. How long is there to go before the wedding? Does the dress work with the colour scheme? Have you had the chance to discuss your choice with your son or daughter? Styles change, and you want to make sure your choice is cohesive with your child’s vision for the day.

There is much to be said for grabbing a wonderful dress when you see it. After all, if you wait too long, it may be out of stock by the time you’ve made up your mind! While you should always take the above considerations into account, you don’t want to miss out on the perfect outfit.

Should I go With My Own Style and Colour?

This depends on how traditional the wedding will be and how particular the bride and groom are about colour schemes and styles. Traditionally, the groom's mother should wait until the mother of the bride has selected her outfit and act accordingly. However, many don’t follow such traditions in 2022.

Our advice is always to talk to the bride, groom and the other mother to make sure everyone is happy with your ideas. You could even go shopping together to find the perfect dress! It’s important to find a dress that the bride and groom love and that reflects your personal style.

Do I Need a Budget for My Outfit?

As with all big purchases, it’s crucial to set a budget beforehand. There’s nothing worse than falling in love with a dress or accessory, only to find it’s £200 more than you were expecting to pay. Set an upper limit and consider whether or not you can be flexible with this number before you go shopping.
